QUETTA: A central leader of the Awami National Party (ANP) and the chief of Achakzai tribe, Sardar Jilani Khan Achakzai, succumbed to injuries and breath his last here at Combine Military Hospital (CMH) on Saturday.The ANP central Deputy General Secretary, Haji Jilani Khan Achakzai along with his associates Haji Karam Khan Achakzai and driver Abuld Samand Khan Achakzai riding in a vehicle were on their way home when unknown gunmen opened fire on their vehicle on Murda Karez Road of Chaman on Thursday evening.
Resultantly, the ANP leader and his colleagues suffered bullet injuries. Jilani Khan received bullet in his abdomen and leg. After provision of aid at Chaman hospital they were shifted to Combine Miltary Hospital Quetta.
The injuries received by the leader proved fatal, causing his death after two days of injuries.
Soon after the news of leader killing markets and shops in Chaman were closed.
ANP and Pashtunkhawa Milli Awami Party (PKmP) strongly condemned the incident while Mutahida Parties Action Committee has announced two days shutter down in Chaman.
Deceased Sardar Jilain would be buried tomorrow (Sunday) in Murda Karez area of Chaman.
The motive behind the killing could not be ascertained. However, BBC Urdu Service quoted his son, Asghar Achakzai, saying that Taliban had disseminated letters against his late father. The slain leader, nonetheless, was unable to identify his actual enemies.
Late Achakzai had joined ANP soon after its formation and twice contested election for the seat of Balochistan Assembly. His supporters, while condemning the killing, demanded of immediate arrest of the murderers.
Levis force is investigating the incident while security in Quetta and Chaman has been tightened to grapple with any unexpected outbreak of violence and reaction by the supporters of the slain Pashtun leader.
Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi and Chief Minister Nawab Mohammad Aslam Raisani have strongly condemned the killing and assured that the perpetrators would be brought to justice.
