EU urged to intervene in Balochistan situation --- Sunday, December 05, 2010

By our correspondent
BRUSSELS: Baloch representative in the United Nations Human Rights Council has told members of the European parliament that Pakistani Army is using the most advanced military tactics against Baloch people for raising voice for their human rights.

Mehran Baloch, as an example mentioned that Pakistan military has proposed building three military cantonments in Balochistan at three crucial and strategically-important locations—in Kohlu, Sui, and in Gwadar—on the straits of Hurmoz, where 40% of the world’s oil passes from the Middle East to the western hemisphere.Mehran alleged that the Pakistani Constitution was heavily tilted in favour of a particular province at the cost of everyone and everything else, thus rendering itself unable to safeguard the rights of minority nationalities. He said after the Dhaka debacle, Pakistani establishment had adopted a much more aggressive role and believed in suppressing any dissenting voice in the bud.

He highlighted that since the start of latest military operation in March 2005, thousands of innocent Baloch women and children have been killed in these operations and over 150,000 Baloch have been forced to flee their hometowns and are living in different IDP camps in Punjab, Sindh and neighboring Afghanistan.

“One of the most gruesome violations of human rights in Balochistan is forced-disappearances. Currently, more then 7,000 Baloch youth and elderly are missing; their family members and relatives are not aware of their whereabouts and condition; no lawyers have access to them and they have not been produced in any court of law. Abduction of Baloch students, journalists, lawyers, teachers, and political activists are carried out on daily basis. The situation in Balochistan for the Baloch is alarming,” said Mehran in his speech.

Speaking about the rise in death of Baloch political activists, Mehran said that in the past four months alone, about 50 bullet-riddled bodies of Baloch missing persons have been found in different areas of Balochistan, even nine bullet-riddled bodies were found in various parts of Balochistan during three days of Eidul Adha.

Referring to recent human rights reports on the volatile situation in the resource-rich province, Mehran told the parliamentarians that even ruling Pakistan People’s Party leader and Balochistan Chief Minister Raisani had admitted that some of the abductions and killings are “definitely carried out by security agencies”.

Mehran said it is a well-known fact that Baloch leader Nawab Nauroz Khan was incarcerated and his followers were executed after the establishment took oath on the Holy Book not to harm them.Mehran appealed to the European Parliament to intervene and play its due role for justice in Balochistan as well as condemn the abductions and killing of Baloch nationalists.
