QUETTA: Chief Minister of Balochistan Nawab Mohammad Aslam Raisani narrowly escaped a suicide attack on Wednesday morning which killed the suicide attacker who struck CM’s convoy while nine people, including four security guards, were injured in the attack, police said.

An underground banned Sunni militant group, the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, claimed responsibility for the suicidal attack on the Baloch chief minister. The attack took place a week after a similar attempt to kill Balochistan governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi when his convoy was attacked by the activists of the Baloch Liberation Army on the way to Quetta while returning from Kalat.

Balochistan’s Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Police Hamid Shakil said the attack on the provincial head of the government was suicide assault. The attack took place on Zarghoon Road near Sariab Railway Cross-section. While the Chief Minister remained safe in the attack, one of the vehicles in convoy with a jammer was badly damaged. The suicide attacker was killed whereas nine more people, including four security personnel, were injured in the attack.

Doctors said one of the injured policemen was in a critical condition.
The DIG also informed that a hand grenade and parts of the attacker’s body were found from the scene.
“We are still investigating what kind of explosives were used in the blast,” said the DIG.
A heavy contingent of police and Frontier Crops personnel reached on the spot and began further investigations. Train service from and to Quetta remained suspended for several hours owing to the attack on the chief minister.

A spokesman for the Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Haider Ali, called various media outlets via satellite phone and accepted responsibility for the assault on the chief minister which the latter narrowly escaped.
The Balochistan Assembly strongly condemned the attack on Nawab Raisani and demanded that elements involved in the attack should be brought to book.
