QUETTA / ISLAMABAD: Security was beefed up in Quetta and other parts of Balochistan on Wednesday after the assassination of BNP-M secretary-general Habib Jalib Baloch.

Presiding over a meeting, Chief Minister Nawab Aslam Raisani asked the authorities concerned to boost security arrangements to foil the designs of anti-social elements who might try to exploit the situation.

“The writ of law must prevail and those involved in heinous crimes must be sternly dealt with,” Nawab Raisani said.

Heavy contingents of Frontier Corps, police and Balochistan Constabulary were deployed around government offices and other important places. FC and police personnel patrolled the provincial capital and adjoining areas.

In Islamabad, the assassination of Habib Jalib was widely condemned by political leaders and members of the civil society.

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani talked to the chief minister and ordered a judicial inquiry.

“The real perpetrators of this cold-blooded murder must be apprehended and brought to justice,” he said.

The prime minister said in a statement that those involved in such heinous crimes had anti-state designs and wanted to create disturbance to destabilise the country.

He offered condolences to the bereaved family and paid tribute to the nationalist leader.

A protest demonstration held by Baloch students at the National Press Club in the federal capital was attended by members of the civil society and activists of leftwing parties.

They raised slogans against targeted killing of political leaders in Balochistan and criticised the authorities for failing to protect citizens.

National Assembly Speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza, Deputy Speaker Faisal Karim Kundi, Senate Chairman Farooq H. Naek, Deputy Chairman Jan Mohammad Jamali, Leader of the House in Senate Syed Nayyar Hussain Bukhari, Leader of the Opposition in Senate Wasim Sajjad and former information minister Sherry Rehman condemned the murder and said it was designed to foment anarchy.

Ms Rehman said in a statement that the targeted killing was part of a series of politically motivated murders in Balochistan.

“The government must act very fast to find the killers of Habib Jalib Baloch as failure to do so will fuel dissent and alienation among the Baloch people.”

Pakistan Muslim League-N chief Mian Nawaz Sharif demanded immediate arrest of the killers.

Balochistan Governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi said Mr Jalib’s death was a great loss for Balochistan.

Chief Minister Aslam Raisani termed the killing an attempt to disturb peace and harmony in the province.

Talking to DawnNews from Dubai, BNP-M chief Sardar Akhtar Mengal said the killing was part of ‘genocide’ of the Baloch nation.

He said the process had been started by Gen Pervez Mushharraf’s government by launching a military operation and killing thousands of Baloch people and was continuing in the democratic era.

“The same powerful forces are involved in the killing of Habib Jalib who had eliminated Nawab Akbar Khan Bugti,” Akhtar Mengal said.

He said Mr Jalib had informed him last week that he was receiving threatening phone calls.

The BNP-M chief said the struggle of the Baloch people would not be affected by the brutal killing.

Senator Dr Malik Baloch of the National Party said that just three days ago a leader of his party, Maula Bakhsh Dashti, had been gunned down in Turbat. Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo termed it a political murder.

Sher Mohammad Bugti of the Baloch Republican Party said the forces which had eliminated Nawab Bugti, Nawabzada Baalach Mari, Waja Ghulam Mohammad, Lala Munir and Sher Mohammad Baloch were involved in the murder of Habib Jalib. He urged the Baloch people to unite to achieve their goal.

Balochistan Assembly Speaker Mohammad Aslam Bhootani, former governor Gen (retd) Abdul Qadir Baloch and federal and provincial ministers also condemned the murder.
