Washington, 6 November (WashingtonTV)—An Iranian commander said on Friday that Pakistan had arrested and then released the leader of the Sunni rebel group, Jondollah, days before a deadly bombing in southeastern Iran claimed by the group.
Brigadier General Hossein Salami, deputy head of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, claimed that Iran had “precise information” that Abdolmalek Rigi had been arrested in Quetta, the capital of Pakistan’s Baluchistan Province.
“We have precise documents and information about the movement and even hideouts of these terrorists,” Salami was quoted as saying by the Fars news agency.
“On 27 September, Abdolmalek Rigi was arrested in one of the streets of Quetta, but after only one hour, he was released following the intervention of agents of the intelligence service of our neighboring country,” he added.
The 18 October suicide bombing in Iran’s Sistan-Baluchestan Province killed 42 people, including 15 members of the Guards Corps.
Iran says that Jondollah operates from inside Pakistan, and has demanded that Islamabad hand Rigi over.
Pakistan has condemned the bombing and vowed to track down those responsible. But it says Rigi is in Afghanistan.
“How is it possible that such a person freely moves about in another country, with a complete escort and under security protection, and is not under the control of the intelligence agency?” Salami said.
