Iran's foreign ministry on Friday dismissed as "unfounded" an accusation by Lebanese caretaker premier Saad Hariri that Tehran was meddling in Beirut's affairs and holding Arab societies "hostage."
"Such unfounded and divisive remarks... are not in the interests of Lebanon," ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast was quoted by the website of state television as saying, according to AFP.
"Adopting such deceitful stances is in line with the interests of an American-Zionist axis," Mehmanparast said, warning that such comments would destabilize the region.

He was speaking a day after Saudi-backed Hariri accused Tehran of meddling in Lebanon's affairs and warned that it was "gradually taking Arab societies hostage."
"Lebanon and a number of Arab countries... are suffering politically, economically and in terms of security from blatant Iranian interference in the Arab world," said Hariri, whose government collapsed on Jan. 12 when the coalition of Tehran's ally Hezbollah withdrew from the cabinet.
Mehmanparast, meanwhile, advised Hariri to "properly understand the teachings of the popular uprisings in the Arab world" and to avoid relying on the West, particularly the United States and Israel.
