US Consul General Reaffirms Support to Balochistan

QUETTA: The United States Consul General to Karachi, Mr. William Martin, has reaffirmed Washington’s commitment to to help Balochistan on long-term basis in rebuilding the basic infrastructure and local economy. He said he looked forward to working with Balochistan in a partnership.

He made these views at Quetta Airport after paying flying visit to flood-stricken districts of Balochistan along with Finance Minister Mir Asim Kurd and Minister of Revenue Zamruk Khan Achakzai. He was the first American diplomat who took an aerial survey of the flood devastated regions of Balochistan.

He said that President Obama and American people were committed to providing assistance to the people of Pakistan, the people of Balochistan, during this “terrible catastrophe.”

“I have seen first-hand the men, women and children, huddled and hungry. This tragedy touches our common humanity,” he said adding that so far the United States had committed $76 million to those Pakistanis who have been affected by the disaster.

“This money is being provided to international Organizations and Pakistani NGOs to provide food, health care, and shelter for those displaced by the floods,” said Martin adding that the NGOs are more experienced thus the funds have been distributing by them.

He said that United States is providing millions of dollars to the International Organization for Migration to assist 70, 000 people in Balochistan and Khyber Pakthunkhwa addition, bridges, boats and heavy equipment have also been given to Pakistan to assist in rescues and to open relief.

He said that the United States responded from a deep commitment to Pakistan and an unwavering belief in humanitarian values.

“The new American Consulate in Quetta will serve as an indispensable platform for the delivery of aid for reconstruction and development,” he added.

He assured that American assistance would continue long after the initial catastrophe.
