Massive Violence Marks Independence Day Celebrations in Balochistan

QUETTA: Rocket attack on Quetta, blasts in Khuzdar, Gwadar, Mastung and some other districts of Balochistan were reported on the eve of the country’s Independence Day in spite of heavy security arrangements made by the government to cope up with any untoward incident.

At least three rockets landed in Quetta, the capital city of gas-rich Balochistan province, injuring a constable of Balochistan Constabulary (BC) and a boy while another two rockets, which had been fired by unidentified persons, could not explode here on Friday.

The first rocket in Quetta landed in Masoom Shah Street close to the residence of Provincial Home Secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani next to the Chief Minister’s Secretariat. As a result, a constable, Lal Mohamad, and a six-year-old passerby Mohammad Umer suffered splinter wounds.

They were taken to Provincial Sandeman Hospital Quetta for treatment. The car parked outside the residence was partially damaged in the blast.

Home Secretary, Mr Akbar Hussain Durrani was safe and unhurt in the rocket attack. No body has claimed responsibility for attacking the residence of the Home Secretary with rockets.

The second rocket hit a house on Prince Road. The house of Haji Mujeeb was partially damaged in the blast. The window panes and glass panels of nearby buildings and hotels were also shattered due to the blast. Since it landed at the main city centre, it created greater panic among the local residents.

The third rocket landed in Imam Bargha Jaffria on McCanghey Road, however it did not explode either. The Bomb Disposal Squad rushed to the site and managed to defuse the rocket.

Separately, two explosions took place in Gwadar where the offices of Deputy Commissioner and Radio Pakistan were partially damaged.

Unidentified men hurled a cracker at Deputy Commissioner’s office on Airport Road of Gwadar. The rocket exploded outside the office and injured two passersby.

The injured were taken to government hospital for treatment. One of the injured was identified as Allah Dad and the identity of another could not be ascertained.

Another blast occurred outside the Radio Station of Pakistan damaging its outer wall. No casualty was reported in this blast. The frequent blasts caused panic among the people of Gwadar and security put on high alert, eyewitnesses told The Baloch Hal.

In Khuzdar, Balochistan’s second largest city, unidentified persons planted an explosive device near the Government Model High School which went off with big explosion. Another explosion took place outside of the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Awaran. An explosive material was planted by unknown persons. However no causality reported in both blasts.

A residence of doctor was attacked with hand grenade in Mastung, however no causality reported in the blast.

Official sources said unknown persons hurled a hand grenade at a house of Doctor Noorul Haq located in Azizabad area of Mastung town. Grenade exploded with big bang in courtyard of the house damaging windowpanes and doors. Doctor Noorul Haq is deputed in Civil Hospital Kalat but he was present at his residence when it came under attack.

All these incidents were reported before the mid night that caused panic. No one claimed the responsibility of the rocket and bomb attacks. However, it is considered as a part of scare campaign on the eve Independence Day.
