Shutter down and protest demonstrations against killing of Ghaffar Lango in custody

Occupied Balochistan: Complete shutter down strike was observed in most parts of Balochistan on Saturday to protest against killing in custody of Baloch political activist Ghaffar Lango whose tortured body was found near Gadani a day earlier. The strike call was made by Baloch National Front and backed by Baloch Republican Party, Baloch Students Organizations and Baloch National Voice. Normal life, business and trade in Khuzdar, Turbat, Panjgur, Mastung, Awaran, Mongechar, Awaran, Pasni Mand, Hoshap and other areas remained paralyzed as most of the shops and business establishments were closed.

Stringent security measures were adopted during the strike to thwart any untoward incident. Heavy contingents of police, Balochistan Levies and other law enforcement agencies were deployed in nationalist strong hold areas. Ghaffar Lango had initiated his politics on the platform of Baloch Haq-i-Tawar, (voice of Baloch rights), a debating forum formed by Nawab Khair Bakhsh Marri. Late Lango was first arrested in 2000 but released after months. However, he was again disappeared in 2006 and after spending three long years in jail, he was released.

However, merely after two months he was whisked away again outside a private hospital in Karachi on December 12, 2009 where his wife was under treatment. His close relative Niaz Ahmed had filed a petition in Sindh High Court in which he stated that Ghaffar Lango was picked up by secret agencies while he was visiting his ailing wife at a private hospital in Karachi. His children never missed a chance to register their protest against illegal detention of their father and they participated in all the noisy demonstrations outside the Supreme Court and Balochistan High Court drawing its attention on very grave human right violation by the public servants. There was no response from the superior courts till his mutilated body was found, a close relative remarked. “Those who think that by killing and dumping the bodies they will settle the issue or press the struggle are living in fools’ paradise. This approach had fueled the hater and vengeance among the Baloch youth.”

BSO-Azad pays tributes: Baloch Student Organization (BSO-Azad) staged a protest demonstration outside the Quetta press club and paid glowing tributes to Ghaffar Lango who they said had sacrificed his life for Baloch movement. Sister of Ghaffar Lango in her statement said that her family will follow the foot-steps of Ghaffar Lango who she stated embraced martyrdom for a great cause. She said although her brother has been pshysically separated from her but ideology will live on forever. Protesting students termed the killing of Mir Ghaffar Lango as ethnic cleansing of Baloch political opponents of the Government. “We received over 200 bodies that were killed under illegal custody of government functionaries,” they said.

They demanded from United Nations to intervene into the matter and play their due role to stop the state terrorism in Balochistan. “The UN has passed its convention prevention of genocide on 9 December 1948 which strongly opposes genocide and all the signatory of this convention have been advised any state [signatory] involved in Genocide should be punished according to International laws. The convention government fails to take actions against crimes against humanity being committed by the state functionaries, the UN General Assembly and its members will take direct against that state/country”.

Speakers said that Pakistan had also signed this convention on 11 December 1948 and conceded to the UN resolution of prevention of Genocide. “Despite accepting the UN convention Pakistan occupied Balochistan and has been committing crimes against humanity and genocide of Baloch Nation from the very same year [1948] but UN General Assembly has failed to take action against Pakistan to stop Baloch genocide.

Karachi Protest: members of Baloch Student Organisation – Azad have also organized a protest demonstration in front of Karachi press Club against the extra-judicial killing of Mir Abdul Ghaffar Langov Baloch. Large number of Baloch women and children also participated in the protest to show their anger toward the occupying state for its crimes against humanity. The protesters strongly condemned the state sponsored terrorism against the people of Balochistan and demand of the International Community to take notice of Pakistan’s atrocities in Balochistan.

Chairman of Voice for Baloch Missing Person (VFBMP) Nasurallah Baloch said Ghaffar Lango was among the eight thousands missing persons and his relatives are on strike since 2009. We had knocked the door of courts, government and judicial commissions but with no avail. We, the relatives of missing persons, appeal to the international humanitarian organizations within the UN system to intervene and play their role against the gross violation of human rights in Balochistan, he added.
