Balochistan Chief Secretary: Army Won’t Be Called in New Winter Capital Gwadar

The Baloch Hal News

QUETTA: The Chief Secretary of Balochistan Ahmed Baksh Lehri has said the provincial government has decided to make the port city of Gwadar as Balochistan’s winter capital not because of pressure from any foreign government but due to increased burden of population on Quetta.

Speaking at a Press Conference at the Civil Secretariat Quetta, Lehri said the decision to make Gwadar as the winter capital of Balochistan had actually been made last year but now the provincial government was gradually heading toward the implementation of the plan. The concept of constructing a port in Gwadar was floated back in 1964 but the plan could not materialize because of political reasons, he added.

“The Chinese government helped in constructing three berths in Gwadar,” he said, “the city has space for eighty more berths.”

The top civil officer said the decision of convening a session of the Balochistan Assembly in Gwadar had still not been finalized yet. In his views, the cost of a meeting of the provincial legislative body would be the same as the amount normally spent on the tours of the ministers to the area. The city, he added, had ample space to host a session of the Balochistan Assembly.

“Gwadar has no law and order problems,” he said, “we intend to develop urban areas in Sherani, Bostan and Bibi Nani as well.”

Responding to a question, Lehri said the Pakistan Army would not called in Gwadar for maintaining peace and security because the local police and the Frontier Corps (FC) deployed in the area were capable of establishing the writ of the government.
