Tragedy in Balochistan: Twine Explosions in Coal Mine Kill Nine, Trap 43 Miners; Army Called

The Baloch Hal News

QUETTA: At least nine coal miners were killed and 43 others trapped when two explosions took place inside mine in Surange area, some 40 Kilometers east of Quetta in the wee hours of Sunday.

The army has been called to retrieve the trapped miners.

Official sources said that about 52 miners were busy in extracting coal from Pakistan Mineral Development Corporation’s (PMDC) mine in Surrange, some 1100 metres underground in the mine when poisonous gas accumulated in poorly ventilated mine and two huge blasts occurred inside the mine. As a result, mine caved- in and all miners trapped inside the mine.

Following the blasts, rescue work was started while a rescue team was dispatched to the site from the Quetta.

Talking to media, Muhammad Ifitkhar, provincial chief inspector of mines, said that 9 bodies were retrieved from the mine so far while efforts were underway to retrieve rest of the trapped miners.

“The miners were killed of suffocation, still a huge quantity of gas is causing difficulties in rescue work,” he said, and adding that it might take two days to remove debris.

Mr. Iftikar said that the provincial Mines Department had warned two weeks ago that work in that mine should be stopped because it leaked gases which could turn dangerous at any time.

Despite official warnings, he said, the administration did not stop the work.

Sources said that death toll could be higher because chances of survival of missing workers were slim. Some bodies which were retrieved from mine were identified as Sherzada, Noor-ul-Ameen, Suleman, Muhammad Anwar, Shahmaroom and Khuda-e-Dad.

The army has been called to help rescue workers to remove debris and retrieve bodies.

“Rescue teams have been reached the site and rescue work is underway,” Mushtaq Raisani, Secretary Mines and Mineral said.
