QUETTA: At least three people were killed and 12 other wounded when a bomb targeting government officials exploded in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province yesterday, police said. The bomb was planted on a motorcycle in a congested bazaar of Dera Murad Jamali town, some 430 kms southeast of Quetta, the capital of the insurgency-hit province.
“Three people have been killed and 12 were wounded. The target was government officials,” Hidayat Ullah, a police official said. Baluchistan’s home secretary Akbar Hussain Durrani said the dead include two employees of a gas company and a member of their paramilitary escort.
Baluchistan, which borders Afghanistan and Iran, has seen an upswing in violence recently, with the province suffering from a separatist insurgency, sectarian violence and Taliban militants.
Hundreds of people have died since rebels rose up in 2004 demanding political autonomy and a greater share of profits from the region’s natural oil, gas and mineral resources. Meanwhile, a relative of Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been killed by international forces, Karzai’s brother and officials said yesterday. The president’s brother, Ahmad Wali Karzai, told AFP that a relative, who he described as “our father’s cousin,” was shot dead near his home in the family’s village in southern Kandahar province by the US-led NATO force overnight. The president was said to be “extremely sad” at the news, his spokesman said.
