The United Nations' refugee agency last night warned that tens and perhaps hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis forced out of their homes by recent devastating floods will have to remain in camps throughout the winter.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees said that large tracts of land in parts of Sindh and Balochistan provinces were still under 3-4ft of water.
Spokesman Adrian Edwards said yesterday that pumping out the stagnant water left by the floods was a massive undertaking that would take time to complete. The UN's aid co-ordination office, meantime, said it still needed around $1.1 billion (£700m) to aid the victims of the devastation. The Pakistan government faced widespread criticism over its handling of the crisis.
