QUETTA: More than 20,000 tents, tones of relief assistance, medicines and 14 water filtration plants are arriving from the United Arab Emirates during the next two days for the flood victims of Balochistan and Sindh.
This was stated by incharge of the UAE army relief force, Brig. Abdur Rehman while talking to a group of Islamabad based foreign journalists and the local journalists of Balochistan who along with the UAE team visited the flood affected areas of Dera Murad Jamali, Jaffarabad and Jacobabad (Sindh) on Monday and distributed relief goods among the flood affected people.
Briefing the journalists about the UAE team’s relief work in Pakistan, Brig.Abdur Rehman said that soon after the flood they moved to Pakistan along with three Chinook helicopters, relief goods and a 29-member medical team to assist the flood affected people. He said first they established there camps and field hospitals in Multan and took part in relief work in southern Punjab and then moved to Balochistan last week.
He said, tones of relief goods from the UAE had already arrived to Pakistan but due to closure of roads in Balochistan due to flash flood it has not yet been delivered to the affected people. He added that as the roads have now opened for traffic so a convey of 250 trucks of relief goods will reach Quetta day after tomorrow for onward distribution among the flood victims.
He said besides providing medical assistance to the flood victims, our three Chinook helicopters have so far shifted 5000 flood affected people from Jacobabad to Dera Murad Jamali and during the second phase they would be repatriated to their hometowns.
Brig. Rhaman said that the devastations of flood in Balochistan were unprecedented where a lot of poor people were badly affected. He appealed to the media, particularly the international media to play their due role to sensitize the international community so they could contribute more for the flood victims.
He said the flood affected people need more help as after the rescue and relief work now the big task for all of us is rehabilitation of these people. “billions of dollars are required and for it the assistance of international community is a must as no country in the world alone can tackle such a huge catastrophe” he said.
Briefing the media in Dera Murad Jamali, Inchage of flood relief efforts in Nasirabad division, Brig. Ahad said that the flood affected 18,00 sq. kilometer area in Balochistan and badly affected Dera Murad Jamali, Rohjan Jamali, Jhal Magsi, Kachi, Dera Alllahyar, Gandaka, Usta Mohammad areas. He said that more than seven lac people were affected in these areas while three lac people were shifted to Dera Murad Jamali from Sindh.
He said that 2,800 villages were completely or partially damaged while 75,000 houses, 378 schools, 433 roads, 55,000 catals, 452 tube-wells and irrigation system was badly damaged.
He said the flood also destroyed various crops on 1.1 million acres of land. He said that Rs 130 million are required for rehabilitation of the flood affected people in Balochistan and appealed to the international community, donors organization and NGOs to help the people of these remote areas of the country.
Brig. Ahad said that as the winter is coming fast in the area so they need 15,000 tents on emergency basis to distribute it among the flood victims as majority of them are still living under the open sky. He added that one tent and two months ration would be provide to each affected family in the repatriation process to the their hometowns.
He thanked the UAE government for sending Chinook helicopters and relief goods to these areas to help the flood victims.
