Senate body rejects report on Balochistan

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Senate Functional Committee on Human Rights on Tuesday rejected the report of Interior Ministry regarding abduction and dumping cases in Balochistan.
The Functional Committee, which met here under the chairmanship of Afrasiab Khattak, was attended by Mrs Suriya Amiruddin, Sardar Ali Khan, Ms Ratna Bhagwandas, Mrs Farhat Abbas, Hafiz Rashid Ahmed and Pervaiz Rashid.
The Committee decided to visit Balochistan on one point agenda after Eid. Afrasiab Khattak said that the committee would demand an independent report from Human Rights Watch, Human Rights Commission of Pakistan and get briefing from the Govt of Balochistan on one point agenda.
He said that the Committee would also meet with the families of victims and get information regarding kidnapping and murder. He said that little information was available about what happens to people, who are forcibly disappeared.
He said that disappearances continue to be a matter of great concern and added that the commission set up to investigate the case of missing persons has been largely ineffective, leading to people’s frustration.
He said that it has been noted that bodies recovered have had signs of extreme torture. Earlier, officials of the Interior Ministry presented a report to the committee which was rejected by the Committee.
The committee also discussed the report of Ministry of Human Rights in the enhancement of harassment/abduction of women in the country.
