QUETTA – The University of Balochistan is facing a deficit of over Rs 500 million after 50 per cent cut in funds by the Higher Education Commission. If the required funds are not provided, the varsity will be shut down within few months.
This was warned by Dr Abdul Nabi, Vice Chancellor University of Balochistan (UoB), while addressing a press conference along with other officials of the university here on Saturday.
He said last year the HEC had made a 50 per cent cut in funds pushing the varsity towards serious financial crisis. He said the government had provided “Grant in Aid” that was helpful to bridge the financial gap of university but now the varsity was again facing a deficit of Rs 500 million as the HEC slashed 50 per cent of its funds. “If university is not given required funds forthwith it will be difficult for it to pay utility bills and salaries of employees. Thus the university will be shut down soon”, he remarked.
Dr Abdul Nabi said the amount of increase in the salaries of government employees during the past two years was also not paid to the university due to which it was bearing additional burden of Rs 150 million. He said the amended act of 1996 was still pending though they had given their recommendations to the government, adding this act should get passed by the assembly as soon as possible.
He said the university was also facing administrative problems owing to Academic Staff Association which instead of taking their regular classes was blackmailing the university administration merely for their own privileges.
Responding to a question regarding leakage of award list of some papers of international relations department from the Secrecy Branch, he said two officers had been suspended in this connection and action would also be taken against other responsible after completion of report of inquiry committee.
He said the university administration was endeavouring to bring more improvement in all faculties by eliminate ever kind of cheating in the varsity.
