Balochistan: the cause of unrest

THE article, “Baloch ‘Intifada’” (Nov 23), by Sanaullah Baloch, was a remarkable read as it rightly pointed out the discriminatory attitude of the centre towards the Baloch. In fact, social and economic deprivation is fuelling insurgency in the province, not Indian meddling as routinely pointed out by the state.

Baloch grievances are deep and should rightly be addressed so as to bring peace in the province. The government should introduce major educational and developmental projects to boost the educational and economic standard of the Baloch. It should ensure, likewise, provision of basic necessities to poor people across the province.

It is unfortunate that many districts of Balochistan lack even the most prime necessities of life like water and healthcare. Such an acute sense of deprivation is fomenting trouble in Balochistan and in turn fuelling insurgency.

Pointing fingers at foreign meddling and Indian involvement won’t solve the political problem of Balochistan. Its problem is not a security issue; it is purely political and should be dealt properly and politically.
