This sinister, wrapped-up package

Prime Minister of Pakistan Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani is currently paying a visit to the port city of Gwadar. Prime Minister undertook this visit for a variety of reasons but, chiefly, to assure the Balochs that his government is serious about addressing their deprivations and solving their problems. This is, at least, what media has said but that is so untrue. The government is not at all serious about addressing and allaying the legitimate concerns of Baloch people. The political activists are still being whisked away presumably by the state secret agencies, unannounced military operation still continues in parts of Balochistan, missing persons have still not been recovered and human rights violation still being committed by the paramilitary troops stationed in Balochistan.

There is no sign of a reconciliation in the true sense, at least not from the government side. The much-vaunted 'Balochistan package' is a fraud. Out of the 39 clauses of this package, almost 24 are just considerations and fanciful promises. The government must apply a saner approach to solving the Balochistan issue and should avoid the old tactic of deceiving people with these so-called packages, recommendations and promises, which in most cases, never offer anything positive to the populace. -SAAD KHOSA, Quetta, December 30
