India, Afghanistan supporting Baloch nationalists: IG FC

QUETTA: India and Afghanistan are supporting separatists in Balochistan, trying to bolster the leadership of nationalists, a top security commander said on Saturday.

‘A lot of evidence of Indian involvement through Afghanistan is there, supporting the separatist movement,’ Maj-Gen Salim Nawaz, inspector-general of the Frontier Corps in Balochistan, said in an interview.

He said the separatists were not very strong as they did not have enough foot soldiers or a proper command.

‘The foreign element, especially the element there in Afghanistan, is trying hard to create more leadership,’ he said.

Brahamdagh Bugti, the grandson of Nawab Akbar Bugti who was killed in a military action in 2006, lives in Afghanistan and is regarded as one of the main separatist leaders. Maj-Gen Nawaz said proof of Indian involvement had been provided.

‘The proof has been given at various levels ... Photographs have been provided,’ he said. He did not elaborate.

The FC chief denied US accusations the Taliban leadership was based in and around Quetta, saying the United States was looking for an excuse for the difficulty it was facing with an intensifying Taliban resistance in Afghanistan.

'These allegations have been leveled in the past,’ he said. ‘They had been dying a death but lately they have started again. In my view, whatever is happening in Afghanistan, if they are not succeeding, there has to be some escape route.’

The United States had handed over no information to back up its assertion regarding the Taliban ‘Quetta shura’, he said.

‘If they have any evidence, which they have not given us a bit of until this moment, they should share it with us. Pakistani forces are quite capable of sorting them out,’ he said.

Maj-Gen Nawaz said it was impossible for Taliban leaders such as Mulla Omar to go unnoticed.

‘If he has to move, or if their leadership has to move, they have to move with some paraphernalia, they need to make some arrangements,’ he said.—Reuters

Manmohan Singh rubbishes Pak charge of India exporting terror

, Oct 11 (ANI): Categorically rejecting Pakistan Interior Minister Rehman Malik’s charge that India is sponsoring some sort of terrorism in his country, the Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Sunday said that “Pakistan jolly well knows this is a false accusation. There is absolutely no truth to it. India is not in the business of exporting terrorism in its neighbourhood.”

Singh, who is in Mumbai, campaigning for the Congress- NCP combine in Maharashtra, was addressing a press conference here.

His reaction was in response to Malik saying that the US should tell India to stop interfering in his country.

” We have asked the US to use its influence to stop India from intervening in Pakistan,” Malik had said.

The Prime Minister also expressed his concern over the absence of progress in the 26/11 investigations in Pakistan, saying that Islamabad must sooner or later realise that state sponsorship of terrorism would have a negative fallout for the South Asian region, and therefore, it was in the interest of both countries to join hands and fight this menace unconditionally and with determination to ensure regional peace and stability.

“They should investigate all those who are involved (in that attack) including Hafiz Saeed, Lashkar-e-Taiba and Jaish-e-Mohammed. There should be a fair trial which will result in proper punishment being given to them. We have not lost hope,” he said.

“For the first time Pakistan admitted that it (attack) had its origins in Pakistan, the conspiracy leading to the tragedy in Mumbai was hatched in Pakistan, that citizens of Pakistan were involved. Pakistan had never before agreed to this… So there is some progress,” he added.

The comment on 26/11 came in response to Malik saying that authorities in Pakistan were unable to detain Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, the alleged mastermind of 26/11, due to lack of a credible evidence. He had also said Islamabad would not be dictated to by India on the issue.

Malik has also accused India of diverting the international community’s attention from the long pending Kashmir issue and the water dispute between both countries by raking up issues like the prosecution of Saeed.

“Whatever we had committed with India, we have done it… in terms of bringing the accused to justice… We arrested the mastermind… It is another thing that they (India) are changing their statements,” Malik said.

Malik reiterated that Islamabad has evidence regarding India’s hand in Baloch insurgency.

“We have proof of Indian involvement in the insurgency in Balochistan… and I say this on the basis of information extracted from those arrested in this connection… we have the evidence that these trained people (insurgents) are entering into Pakistan from Afghanistan,” he said.

He added tat “Our information is that India is involved in training insurgents.”

Singh also condemned Saturday’s terror attack on Pakistan’s Army General Headquarters in Rawalpindi, saying such incidents highlighted the gravity of the menace confronting South Asia, and the need for urgent counter-measures. (ANI)

Intl community should ask Pak to act against terror: India

New Delhi, Oct 7 (PTI) India Wednesday urged the international community to bring pressure on Pakistan to implement its commitment to act against terror groups within its territory.

It also pledged to "invest and endure" in Afghanistan for peace, democracy and development there.

"The international community should put effective pressure on Pakistan to implement its stated commitment to deal with terrorist groups within its territory, including members of al-Qaeda, Taliban's Quetta Shura, Hizb-e-Islami, Lashkar-e-Toiba and other like-minded terrorist groups," India's Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao said here.

"India has already made up its mind -- invest and endure, because we believe in the cause of peace, democracy and development in Afghanistan," Rao said in her concluding remarks at a two-day international seminar on 'Peace and Stability in Afghanistan: The Way Ahead'.
