A colourful display of Baloch culture

Karachi

Thousands of people, most of them dressed in traditional Balochi attire and armed with swords, marched on camels, donkeys, motorcycles and buses towards the Clifton beach where a grand event had been organized to celebrate the Baloch Culture Day.

Traffic remained suspended on city roads for hours as the marchers put on a colourful display of Baloch culture on the streets before gathering at Sea View. “I think it is the biggest yet Baloch gathering in the city,” said Jameel Baloch who was dancing to the tune of a folk song being sung by the Dane pe Daana singer Akhtar Chenal during a musical show at the beach. Other big names in Balochi music like Hafeez Baloch also sang for the crowd.

Wearing a Paag (turban) on his head, Sheeraz Aziz Baloch said the event showed the sense of solidarity among the Baloch. “It shows we are still united despite all odds of time.” Some politically charged participants were also chanting slogans against “oppression” in Balochistan.

Balochi-embroidered dresses and other cultural items were put on display at a number of stalls on the beach while some children also performed tableaus. Earlier in the morning, a cultural event was also held at the University of Karachi.
