Massacre of Baluch in Karachi should be a Matter of Immediate Concern

Point of View: Walid Garboni

Since the start of this millennium Baluch youth of Karachi have been armed to teeth with sophisticated weapons by the secret hands and set at one and other. This has resulted loss of hundreds of precious young lives. City police and consecutive provincial authorities’ silence over the issue is understandable to the observers, however, nationalist Baluch politicians’ detachment from this major conspiracy is astonishing.

The fight between the armed youth has escalated recently. While this has taken more than 15 lives within a month, media reports are hinting that the ruling Party is directly responsible. For instance Pakistani news paper daily ‘Times’ columnist Ali K Chishti reports “the conflict in Lyari is now between Nabeel Gabol and another member of the PPP,…” source

Learnt sources identify the other member as Zulfiqar Mirza who happened to be the interior minister of Sind and paid agent of the ethnic group ‘MQM’. MQM is a group which receives its direction directly from London where its leader Altaf Hussain is based. Other sources suggest that the fight between the two is over the pocket money paid by MQM for their being obedience.

While an army operation is undergoing in Baluchistan since June 2004, major Baluchistani politicians are engaged in a campaign against Pakistani army to alleviate its impact on the people of Baluchistan. Hence Baluch of Karachi are forgotten, though many Baluch of Karachi are mobilised against the army operation in Baluchistan.

Figures show the number of Baluch youth killed in Karachi during the brotherly conflicts and in the hands of other ethnic groups in this millennium as more than those who were killed in the war-front against the army operation. Unnecessary to mention, the brotherly fights have no political impacts, but lives lost are of Baluch youth who could have become national political workers or even leaders.

Therefore, the issue of loss of hundreds Karachiite Baluch lives that bothers none of Pakistanis should be a matter of immense concern for Baluchistani politicians and they ought to act urgently. Particularly Baluch organisation such as Baluch Unity Conference, Baluch Ettehad Tahrik and Baluch Rights Council which have their roots in Karachi could play a vital role towards easing the tension between the Baluch youth.

More importantly a seminar in London organised by the London based Baluch, including core PPP members, will bring forth a positive outcome.
