Brother of Sunni rebel leader hanged in Iran

Tehran - The brother of the leader of the Sunni Muslim rebel group Jundollah was hanged Monday in south-eastern Iran, the official news agency IRNA reported.

Abdolhamid Rigi was convicted of terrorism and hanged in front of family members of his victims in a prison in Zahedanm, capital of Sistan-Baluchistan province, the report said.

Abdolhamid Rigi was arrested last year. His brother, Jundollah leader Abdolmalek Rigi, was captured in February.

Iran accuses the Jundollah group is accused of terrorism including the October bombing in Sistan-Baluchistan that killed more than 40 people, including 15 senior members of the Revolutionary Guards.

The group is allegedly involved in drug trafficking and kidnapping in the province, which borders Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Tehran also accuses Jundollah of sowing discord between the Shiite majority and the Sunni minority in Iran. The group says it is fighting against discrimination and for the rights of the Sunnis.

Iran has accused the United States of supporting Abdolmalek Rigi and Jundollah, which Washington denies.

Sistan-Baluchistan province is a major transit route for narcotics from Afghanistan. It has been hit by a string of attacks and kidnappings, including of foreigners.

Abdolmalek is in custody awaiting trial.
