Baloch Leaders See Musharraf Trial As Key To Healing Wounds

Shah Zain said hundreds of Baloch people were still missing and no solid steps had been taken for their release.

ISLAMABAD: The top Baloch leadership see Musharraf's trial as the key to healing the wounds of their province, tackling the sense of deprivation and feeling of hatred among the people of Balochistan towards Islamabad.

National Party Senator Mir Hasil Khan Bizenjo told The News though Balochistan remained a deprived province throughout the history of Pakistan but it was the focal point of Musharraf's atrocities.

He said Musharraf not only deprived the Baloch people of their rights but also launched a military operation against them for raising voice for their rights. Bizenjo was of the view if the former military dictator was tried under Article 6 and other cases, it will give the Baloch people a sense that the people running the affairs in Islamabad had recognised their miseries, problems and atrocities inflicted upon them during the Musharraf regime.

Bizenjo termed it high time to win over the Baloch people by starting a trial of Musharraf for bringing Baloch back into the national mainstream politics. He also stressed the need for swift action to bring an end to the present killing of Baloch leaders and implementation of development packages.

Jamhoori Watan Party (JWP) chief and late Akbar Bugti's son Talal Bugti, while talking to The News, said there was no doubt that trying Musharraf under Article 6 and in the murder case of his father would be an acknowledgment of Baloch people's basic demand.

He said Musharraf was a notorious dictator who for prolonging his regime and silencing the Baloch voice had not only killed Akbar Bugti but also breached the Constitution repeatedly. Talal demanded immediate arrest of Musharraf and start of legal proceedings against him. However, Talal said, besides trying Musharraf, the government should fulfil its promises of development in Balochistan and start implementing the packages announced so far.

National Party Senator Dr Abdul Malik, while talking to The News, said though people from all corners of the country were demanding the trial of Musharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution but especially the people of Balochistan, who were the main victims of Musharraf's atrocities, were more concerned about his trial.

Dr Abdul Malik said ignoring the Baloch demand to try Musharraf in Nawab Akbar Bugti's case will only add to the sense of deprivation among the people of Balochistan. He said the government should not compromise on the will of Baloch people and start the trial of Musharraf in all cases registered against him and start proceedings against him under Article 6.

Pakhtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party (PkMAP) chief Mehmud Khan Achakzai said Baloch as well as the national leadership had been demanding a trial of Musharraf for the last many months. He said beside this, the real issue is that Pakistan as a state is facing a terrible situation; henceforth, a national strategy should be adopted to get the nation out of this great crisis. Achakzai went to the extent of saying that if the Pakistani leadership didn't address the present situation, then our beloved Pakistan could become a history.

The grandson of Nawab Akbar Bugti and Baloch leader Shah Zain Bugti, while talking to The News, also pressed for immediate trial of Musharraf under Article 6 for killing of his grandfather and the Baloch people.

Shah Zain said hundreds of Baloch people were still missing and no solid steps had been taken for their release. The young Baloch leader seemed to be more concerned about the trial of Musharraf under Article 6 and he went on to say that anyone who breaches or tries to breach the Constitution of the country must be hanged
