Baluchistan Violence Thwarts Gas Prospects

The Sui, Uch, Pirkoh and Loti gas fields in Dera Bugti lie at the center of most of the conflict in Baluchistan.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Guerrilla attacks in the Pakistani province of Baluchistan targeting the gas sector are responsible for a declining regional economy, a study shows.

A government economic report on Baluchistan province obtained by the Pakistani Daily Times describes a declining security situation as the primary factor to obstacles in the exploration of gas productivity.

The report said more than 60 percent of the 657 terrorist attacks in 2006 and around 30 percent of terrorist-related deaths in Pakistan occurred in Baluchistan.

The Sui, Uch, Pirkoh and Loti gas fields in Dera Bugti lie at the center of most of the conflict in Baluchistan.

Apart from gas fields, the economic report identified gas pipelines, government offices and regional transport infrastructure as frequent targets of insurgent attacks.

The security situation in Baluchistan was cited as an obstacle to development of the Iran-Pakistan-India natural gas pipeline, though the intended route still runs through the province.

Apart from IPI, Argentina has come forward with plans to invest in the Pakistani oil and gas sector in Baluchistan and Sindh province, giving particular attention to a gas pipeline to Turkmenistan.
