LAHORE: Jamhoori Watan Party's (JWP) central leader Shahzain Bugti has said the federal government can counter separatist movements in Balochistan by granting people their legitimate rights, a private TV channel reported on Sunday.
Shahzain said the demands included the trial of former president Pervez Musharraf, an end to the army operation in Balochistan, ending the involvement of agencies in the province's affairs and granting equal rights to the Baloch people. He said the Bugti tribe wanted to see Musharraf tried and hanged for murdering Nawab Akbar Bugti.
Shahzain demanded equal rights for the Baloch people and said the masses should accept the sardari system in Balochistan, as it was a centuries old tradition.
The JWP leader said there were no preparations to celebrate the "Baloch Independence Day in memory of Sardar Ataullah Mengal and Sardar Khair Bakhsh Marri" on August 11, as had been announced by the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Shahzain said Mir Aali Bugti had no support in the Bugti tribe and the government had installed him as the Bugti tribe's head without popular support.
He said the tribesmen would never accept the leadership of Aali, as he only enjoyed the support of the government and its agencies.
He said there were around 0.15 million Bugti tribesmen settled in Dera Bugti, but there were only 30,000 Bugtis in the area currently, as many had to leave due to the military operation.
Shahzain said Mir Jam Muhammad Yousaf, former Balochistan chief minister, had a major role in the assassination of his grandfather, Nawab Akbar Bugti. He said the government had captured all the property of Akbar Bugti, and made Dera Bugti a ‘no-go area' for the Bugti tribesmen. The JWP leader again announced that he would go to Dera Bugti along with the leadership of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, Tehreek-e-Insaaf and Jamaat-e-Islami. Shahzain said the country could not afford the creation of new provinces.
