Pakistan, China move quickly on economic corridor from Gwadar port over India’s objections

Pakistan Chief of Army Staff Gen. Raheel Sharif on June 10, 2015, assured the People’s Republic of China (PRC) that there would be no hurdles in the completion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) project, adding that maximum security was put in place for completion of the project.

The CPEC will transform the Arabian Sea port of Gwadar (in occupeid Balochistan) into a mega-hub, linked by rail, road, pipeline, and air services to Kashgar, in the PRC’s Xinjiang province. PRC project investment would exceed $45-billion.
He was talking to the PRC Vice Minister of Ministry of State Security Mr. Dong Haizhou who called on him at the General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.
The 3,000km corridor development project was launched in April 2015 during PRC Pres. Xi Jinping’s visit to Islamabad. India strongly objected to the CPEC, saying that the route of corridor was controversial.
Indian Foreign Minister Sushma Swaraj had said that “Prime Minster Modi during his recent [May 2015] visit to Beijing took up the issue very firmly and spoke very strongly that the CPEC going through PoK (Pakistan-occupied Kashmir) is unacceptable”.
