Wednesday's deal was widely reported in India where perceptions persist that Gwadar could be converted into a dual-use port facility by China, potentially abetting the Chinese People's Liberation Army-Navy's power projection in the western Indian Ocean.

Visits such as that by General Fan offer the opportunity for course correction where necessary as well as providing a reminder to Pakistan (and its less than malleable politicians) as to who is bankrolling the exercise. Fan also met with Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in Islamabad Thursday, with Sharif lauding Islamabad's friendship with Beijing as a "cornerstone" of its foreign policy. A high level military delegation headed by the Vice-Chairman of the Central Military Commission of China, General Fan Changlong has called upon Chief of Army Staff General Raheel Sharif at GHQ.

According to an official statement, the Prime Minister emphasized the time-tested friendship between the two countries.

He also said that the mutually supportive cooperation in the field of defense is a critical factor in maintaining peace and stability in the region.

In his meeting with Gen Sharif at General Headquarters on Thursday, Fan said, "China deeply appreciates the determination of Pakistan Army in counter terrorism and the successful operation in various fields". The nature of the relationship between China and Pakistan is swiftly evolving, all the quicker since the announcement of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). Both countries are committed to its continuous process and future success. Gen Fan said, "Efforts of Pakistan Army in safeguarding CPEC security are highly appreciated". He said China would also relocate a few of its industries from China to Pakistan that would create thousands of jobs and contribute in GDP of the country.

Ahsan Iqbal pointed out that it is need of the hour that Pakistan completes the projects on its side to take advantage of the economic collaboration and match the pace with China that is completing its projects on fast-track basis.

Wang Shida, an expert on Afghanistan at the Beijing-based China Institute of Contemporary worldwide Relations, said China has already invested more than $40 billion for the development of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor and Gwadar Port will play an important role in the economic prosperity of both nations. He said he was looking forward to exchanging in-depth views with leaders of Pakistan and Pakistani armed forces on the relations between the two countries and two armed forces and other issues of common interest.
