QUETTA/LONDON: The 35th Khan of Kalat (KoK), Mir Suleman Dawood, has called upon Balochistan governor Nawab Zulfiqar Ali Magsi, Chief Minister Nawab Mohammad Aslam Raisani and provincial minister Sardar Sanaullah Zehri, who is also the chief of Jhalwan, to immediately resign from their top official posts because of their failure to stop the bloodshed of the Baloch masses by the security forces.
Dawood, who currently dwells in the United Kingdom after ascertaining political asylum, rose to prominence in September 2006 when he convened a grand Baloch jirga (gathering of tribal notables) deciding to challenge the State of Pakistan at the International Court of Justice for ‘illegally usurping’ the sovereign status of the independent State of Kalat in 1947. The much-hyped Jirga was also attended as the opposition leaders by Magsi, Raisani and Zehri who have now become top governmental officials, giving Suleman a sense of betrayal. Five years down the line, Suleman never filed a case for unknown reasons.
In a rare interview with the media, the Khan of Kalat enjoined Balochistan governor, chief minister and the chief of Jhalwan Sardar Sanaullah Zehri to step down from the positions they currently hold because Baloch sons are being killed on daily basis. He charged these three Baloch tribal and political figures of either being “directly responsible” for the operation against Baloch masses or remaining utterly helpless in containing the deadly operations.
“If Magsi, Raisani and Zehri are too powerless to stop the bloodbath of the Baloch sons then they should resign,” recommended the Khan of Kalat, “whatever is happening in Balochistan today does not bode well for the tribal status of these notables. They are gradually becoming ‘national criminals’ by keeping silence over the massacre of the Baloch citizens.”
Suleman said Magsi, Raisani and Zehri should prove themselves as the “loyal sons” of the land (Balochistan) by giving up their current lucrative official positions before they lose the respect of the people of Balochistan. He also warned that the conflagration in Balochistan may hit the families and children of these prominent Baloch leaders as well if they do not opt for a timely decision.
Suleman considers himself as a pro-independent Balochistan leader even though his tribe is not directly involved in the ongoing armed struggle in Balochistan. One of his brothers, Agha Faisal Dawood, served as the Communication Minister in Balochistan’s previous pro-Musharraf government with Jam Mohammad Yousaf of the Pakistan Muslim League (Quaid-e-Azam) as the chief minister. Furthermore, scores of his family members still serve as ministers in the provincial minister. However, Suleman says he does not see eye-to-eye with his family members who have joined the government. He insists it is for the Baloch nation to own or disown the members of his family who prefer power over the nationalist movement.
“The dead bodies we are receiving every day are going to serve as fuel for the Baloch national movement rather than weakening our resolve,” he foresaw. ” The dead bodies are ‘gifts’ being offered to the Balochs by President Asif Ali Zardari who is adding to the Baloch injuries rather than healing them,” he commented sarcastically over the government claims to have initiated a policy of :national reconciliation” in the volatile gas-rich southwestern province.
