Acid attacks dominate debate in BA

By Mohammad Zafar

Occupied Balochistan, QUETTA: Acid attacks on girls dominated the debate during the Balochistan Assembly proceedings on Thursday where the members of provincial assembly (MPAs) criticised the government for its failure to arrest the criminals responsible for this atrocious act of violence against women.

After the question hour, parliamentarian Robina Irfan tabled an adjournment motion in which she condemned the acid attacks, demanding protection for women.

Irfan demanded the immediate arrest of the culprits involved in the heinous offence, saying that they should be meted out exemplary punishments to ensure no one commits such an act in future.

Speaking on the admissibility of her motion, she said the people of Balochistan held women in great respect in line with local traditions that dated back hundreds of years.

The minister for Agriculture, Asad Baloch, termed the acid attacks “a conspiracy against the Baloch rights movement and a move to defame it”. Labour Minster Maulvi Sarwar, MPA Ghazala Gola along with other BA members supported the motion and strongly condemned the violent act.

Magsi presented a detailed report on the two separate incidents where acid was thrown on five girls in Dalbandin and Kalat areas in April. In the first incident, she said, the two accused – Farooq and Abdul Basit – were arrested and released after their statements were recorded. In Kalat, Magsi said, nine suspects were taken into custody and freed after interrogation.
