Pakistan security forces have unleashed a massive crackdown all over France-sized southwestern province Balochistan province in retribution for the Saturday killings of 20 laborers in the coastal Mekran divison.
The security forces in league with provincial government are ruthlessly killing innocent civilians in gross violation of the Geneva conventions and fundamental rights of Baloch people,” said former Balochistan fisheries minister Kachkol Ali, who is now self-exiled in Oslo, Norway. “Rather they are gravely breaching all norms of international humanitarian conduct in Gogdan.”

The massive crackdown on the Baloch militants comes in the wake of an attack by insurgents of the Baloch Liberation Front on the camp of the army-owned Frontier Works Organization. The camp was located at Gogdan, 15 miles from Turbat hometown of chief minister Abdul Malik. Home minister of the province, Sarfaraz Bugti, who works with Pakistan spy service Inter-Service Intelligence blamed arch rival India for helping the insurgents.

“The operation is going on full steam in Gogdan, but also is being systematically escalating in other regions. The legal duties of the belligerents during hostilities are largely governed by the regulations annexed to the 1907 Hague Convention and by the four 1949 Geneva Conventions as extended by protocols adopted in 1977.

“These conventions dictate that there are some methods of making war which are impermissible such as killing or wounding an enemy who is already wounded or has surrendered, destruction of property without military necessity, targeting innocent citizen and non-combatants, protecting the sick,” Kachkol Ali said.

Media reports said security forces have killed 13 innocent civilians including sick persons, children and women. “They are indiscriminately destroying the mud houses of poor Baloch folks. The security forces are seriously committing war crimes and are grossly breaching articles of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, 1998.

Baloch media reports said Pakistani TV channels and Radios have reportedly been broadcasting warnings to the civilians to evacuate the area.

London-based Baloch Warna, which is believed to be run by Baloch Liberation Army operational chief and former Balochistan minister Hyrbyair Minister, said Pakistan military and other security forces have ordered the local population to vacate Mekran after a high level security meeting in Quetta, capital of Balochistan. Chief Minister Abdul Malik chaired the meeting.
According to Baloch Warna, the military and para-military forces have announced to deploy of 3,000 additional troops, 10 gunship helicopters, armored vehicles, and ambulances in the region to improve the ‘law and security’ situation.

On Friday at least three BLA fighters were killed in a firefight against Pakistan forces in Machch area of Balochistan who were identified as Rahmdil Marri aka Mama, Zamuri Marri and Adam Khan Marri.

Baloch pro-independence leaders accuse Pakistan of committing gross human rights violations and war crimes in Balochistan since it occupied their sovereign country in March 1948 at gun-point.

At least seven of the victims in the BLF attack were from Sindh. The deceased included two brothers, Sobhdar Makwano, 30, and Majnu Makwano, 24, and their three cousins Nalemitho Makwano, 25, Karo Makwano, 20, besides Majeed Makwano from Islamkot tehsil; and Ayub Mangwano, 40, and Aslam Mangwano, 28, from Badin.
The killings have angered Sindhi nationalists.

“All Baloch political groups must condemn this brutal killing of Sindhis. No ifs and buts,” said Dr Gul Metlo, a London-based businessman. “This is very much in the mutual interest of Sindhis and Balochs,” he said, adding, “Sooner the better.”
