Balochistan: Gathering In Memory Of Human Rights Advocate Ya'qub Mehrnahad

God will bring no change in the conditions of any people unless they themselves set about to change their circumstances [Ya'qub Mehrnahad]

Balichah: BSO-azaad Thump (zone) has organised a memorial gathering to pay tributes to Baloch writer Shaheed Ya' qub Mehrnahad Baloch on his first death anniversary. Mr Sadaam Abaitak presided the gathering. Bebgar Baloch, Naseer Gichki and Ghulam Mustafa Baloch were the special guests whereas; Saddam Bashir Baloch chaired the meeting. Two minute silence was observed in respect of all Baloch Martyrs of western occupied Balochistan.

Speaking at the occasion BSO-azaad leaders said that freedom cannot be gained without sacrifices and Baloch are sacrificing their lives for Independent Balochitan. They said the possible formation of "Council for Independent Balochistan" consisting representatives from both sides of divided Balochistan was a good sign and the need of hour.

They further stated that ya'qub Mehrnahad was a freedom loving writer and journalist from Western occupied Balochistan. He was abducted at gunpoint on 20 April 2007 by the Iranian (Gajer) forces. He was later hanged in public on 4 August 2008. The speakers said that they wanted to remind the oppressors that Baloch struggle cannot be stopped or weaken by such brutal acts of these cruel regimes infect such acts further infuriate the Baloch and intensify the hatred that Baloch have in their hearts against the occupiers.

They said BSO-azaad is a Students study circle but the organisation will not be a silent spectator to the state atrocities against Baloch people. That is why BSO-azaad is on strike in every corner of Balochistan.

Addition information: "God will bring no change in the conditions of any people unless they themselves set about to change their circumstances. These enlightened and sacred words are providing the motivation for all my activities. I believe that by turning these divine words into action, people can change their own and their society's conditions and move from darkness to light, from injustice, inequality, poverty, and tyranny to the ideals and the legitimate demands of humankind."

These words can be read on the first page of the blog kept by Ya'qub Mehrnahad, who was executed on August 4, 2008. Although it attracted no international news coverage or official reaction, his death shocked human rights advocates who see in his case an escalation of violence by the Islamic Republic against its peaceful opponents. A 28-year-old father of three from Balūchestān*, Mehrnahad was the president of the Youth Voice of Justice Association (YVJA), a legally-registered organization, founded in 2002, that focuses on accountability, education and training, discrimination, and civic responsibility. He also worked for a local publication called Mardomsalary (Democracy).

Mr. Ya'qub Mehrnahad was arrested at the annual meeting "Questioning Youth, Accountable Authorities" in early May 2007. Some state officials were reportedly present at this meeting. There were various irregularities during his detention. Mr. Mehrnahad was detained for 5 months in various detention centers of the Ministry of Intelligence and had no contact with his family or attorney. He was then transferred to Zahedan's central prison where he was held for another two months. His first visit with his family probably took place in this prison, 5 months after his arrest. He was tried on December 25, 2007. Instead of receiving his sentence, expected 10 days after the trial, he was returned to the detention center of the Ministry of Intelligence to be interrogated again; he was again denied visits.
